India's Test Team in Crisis? Mohammed Kaif on Gambhir's Management & Player Insecurity (2025)

Are fear and insecurity crippling India's Test team? Former India batter Mohammed Kaif certainly thinks so, and his words paint a concerning picture of the current team environment under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. Kaif's observations come after India's disappointing loss to South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens, a match where the batting lineup seemed to falter. But here's where it gets controversial...

Kaif believes that a lack of job security is hindering the progress of Indian batsmen, particularly in home conditions. He points to the frequent changes in the playing XI as a major issue. For instance, in the recent Test, India opted for four spinners, including two all-rounders, a move that displaced a specialist batter, Sai Sudharsan, from the crucial number three position.

Kaif highlighted the case of Sarfaraz Khan, who seems to have been sidelined despite his past performances. On his YouTube channel, Kaif stated, “Whichever players are playing, they don’t have a feeling that someone is standing for them. Koi backing nahi hai, sab darr ke khel rahe hain. (There is no backing; everyone is playing with fear.) Sab dar ke khel rahe hain, koi khul ke nahi khel raha (Everyone is playing in fear, nobody is playing with freedom.)” He further added that even after scoring a century, players like Sarfaraz Khan are not guaranteed a spot in the team, and even Sai Sudharsan, after scoring 87 runs, was dropped in the next match. This constant chopping and changing, Kaif suggests, creates confusion and instability within the team.

And this is the part most people miss... Kaif argues that this insecurity affects the players' confidence, especially when playing on turning tracks. He believes that the players' self-belief diminishes, leading to poor performances. He contrasts this with the performance of Washington Sundar, who he believes adapted well due to his upbringing in Tamil Nadu, where he frequently played on turning pitches.

Kaif suggested that if Sai Sudharsan had played at number 3 and Sundar at number 8, India might have won the Test match.

What do you think? Do you agree with Kaif's assessment of the team's environment? Is the lack of job security impacting the players' performance? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
