A former Indian cricket legend has some bold advice for Gautam Gambhir after India's disappointing Test defeat to South Africa in Kolkata.
The match, which ended in just two and a half days, saw India fall short by 30 runs, with the pitch facing criticism despite Gambhir's support as head coach.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Former batter Wasim Jaffer took to social media to suggest a return to the classic Indian pitches of the past. He believes the current strategy, which favors spin bowling, is not working and is causing India to struggle against stronger teams like South Africa.
Jaffer wrote, "It seems we haven't learned from our mistakes. The gap between our spinners and theirs is too narrow on these pitches. We need to go back to the classic Indian pitches, like during Virat Kohli's captaincy, when England and New Zealand toured."
And this is the part most people miss...
Under Gambhir's coaching, India's Test performance has taken a hit. The team has lost four out of their last six home Tests, and their struggles against SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) are evident.
Gambhir himself acknowledged the pitch's role, stating, "This is exactly what we asked for. The curator was supportive, and this is the kind of pitch we wanted."
So, is it time for a change in strategy? Should India revert to the traditional pitches that Jaffer suggests? Or is there another way to address their recent Test woes?
